Plea for installing CCTV cameras to avert crimes

State Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Advocate Qamrul Islam on Saturday said installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras should be made mandatory in apartments and industrial units for strengthening overall security system to avert crimes and other untoward situations, reports BSS .

Crimes are being committed easily in apartments, industrial units and different commercial establishm-ents due to lack of proper security and law enforcers are facing difficulties to trace the culprits of particular crimes, he told a roundtable discussion at Dhaka Reports Unity (DRU) here.

Mother Teresa Memorial Society Bangladesh (MTMSB) organized the discussion on ‘Installation of CCTV cameras at residential buildings and industrial units for security’ with MRMSB Chief Advisor Dr Mizanur Rahman Shelley in the chair.

Chairman of Board of Director of Bangladesh Agriculture Bank Khandaker Ibrahim Khalid, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Food and Disaster Management Asit Kumar Mukut Moni and Commanding Officer of RAB Lt Col Md. Rafiqul Islam, among others, spoke.

Qumrul said CCTV cameras could be used as effective tool to find out clues of particular crimes, which significantly will reduce crimes in the society as a whole.

The country witnessed an impressive progress in the field of information communication technology due to time-befitting initiatives taken by the present government, he said adding technological advancement should be utilized in strengthening security system for ensuring security of life and property.

Lt Col Rafiqul said United State of America used CCTV cameras in 1940 and it gave permission of use of CCTV cameras at private organizations in 1949 while United Kingdom(UK) used CCTV cameras in 1960.

Australia is the most successful country for using CCTV cameras in its security purposes, he said adding Bangladesh can use CCTV cameras in strengthening security in different places of society including residential buildings, industrial units and different other busy places.

Lt Col Rafiqul said city dwellers could install CCTV cameras easily at their apartments as the price of CCTV is within the capacity of the people.

Other speakers observed that crime pattern has been changed in society due to advancement of technology and high population growth rate. Technological advantages including CCTV cameras should be applied in residential areas and potential zones of crimes to discourage criminals for committing crimes, they added.
